Mastercard Sponsors XRP Ledger Hackathon in New York

Mastercard Sponsors XRP Ledger Hackathon in New York

Mastercard is backing a 36-hour XRP Ledger developer hackathon in New York scheduled for Oct. 24-25, bringing one of the world’s largest payments companies into an event focused on building financial applications on XRPL. The sponsorship adds to Mastercard’s broader work with blockchain-based settlement, including planned support for Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin across multiple networks.

Mastercard Joins XRP Ledger Developer Event

XRPL Commons announced on Aug. 26 that Mastercard will sponsor the upcoming XRP Ledger Hackathon, a 36-hour event designed to bring developers together to create and launch blockchain applications ahead of Ripple’s Swell conference.

The hackathon will take place in New York on Oct. 24–25 and will feature four primary development categories:

  • Protocol innovation – projects focused on the underlying XRP Ledger, amendments, clients and developer infrastructure.
  • Agentic finance – applications where software agents can initiate, manage or automate financial activities.
  • Lending and borrowing – products built around lending infrastructure and the proposed XRP Ledger Lending Protocol.
  • Open track – existing or new projects that introduce additional functionality to the XRP Ledger.

The event is intended to encourage developers to build practical applications rather than simply experiment with blockchain technology.

However, Mastercard’s participation should not be interpreted as confirmation of a new Mastercard product running on XRPL.

The sponsorship establishes Mastercard as a supporter of the developer event. It does not mean the company has committed to commercially deploying a hackathon project, integrating its payment network with a particular application or providing participants with access to its broader commercial infrastructure.

Sponsorship Does Not Equal a New XRPL Product

The distinction is important because major corporate sponsorships can easily be interpreted as evidence of an imminent commercial rollout.

At this stage, there is no public confirmation that Mastercard will launch any application produced during the hackathon.

XRPL Commons has also not disclosed the size of Mastercard’s sponsorship, whether the company will participate in judging, or whether developers will receive direct access to Mastercard’s payment systems.

Consequently, claims that the sponsorship represents a major new XRP adoption initiative would go beyond the information currently available.

The event nevertheless places a major global payments company directly alongside developers building applications for blockchain-based finance.

That is significant given Mastercard’s separate efforts to incorporate regulated digital assets into its settlement infrastructure.

Mastercard Is Expanding Stablecoin Settlement

Mastercard has already announced plans to expand its settlement capabilities to include regulated stablecoins.

The initiative includes support for Ripple USD (RLUSD) alongside stablecoins issued by companies including Circle, SoFi and Paxos.

The XRP Ledger is among the blockchain networks Mastercard identified as part of the planned infrastructure.

The other supported networks include Arbitrum, Base, Canton, Ethereum, Polygon, Solana and Tempo.

The objective is to provide participating financial institutions with additional ways to settle transactions, including the possibility of using blockchain-based settlement during periods when traditional financial systems are less accessible.

Mastercard has indicated that the expanded infrastructure could support settlement during intraday periods, weekends and holidays.

However, the presence of a blockchain on Mastercard’s infrastructure does not mean that every transaction will automatically use that network.

Instead, blockchain settlement would become another option within a broader payments system that continues to include conventional fiat-based settlement.

RLUSD Support Does Not Automatically Mean XRP Demand

There is another important distinction between the XRP Ledger and XRP itself.

RLUSD is a stablecoin designed to maintain a value of one US dollar, while XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger.

A transaction settled using RLUSD on XRPL therefore does not necessarily create the same type of demand for XRP that direct XRP payments would generate.

Mastercard’s stablecoin strategy is primarily focused on using regulated digital currencies as settlement assets.

For XRP investors, this distinction matters because increasing activity on the XRP Ledger and increasing demand for XRP are not necessarily identical outcomes.

The blockchain can host applications and stablecoin transactions even when the settlement asset being transferred is RLUSD rather than XRP.

Ripple, Mastercard and Gemini Are Exploring RLUSD Settlement

Mastercard’s relationship with the XRP ecosystem also extends beyond the upcoming hackathon.

Ripple previously announced a collaboration involving Mastercard, WebBank and Gemini to explore using RLUSD for settlement associated with Gemini’s credit-card transactions.

Under the proposed structure, WebBank serves as the card issuer and Mastercard provides the payment network, while RLUSD could potentially be used as an institutional settlement asset.

The initiative was described as an exploration rather than a confirmed full-scale commercial deployment.

That means the participating companies are evaluating the technology and its potential use in payment settlement, but the announcement itself did not guarantee that the system would eventually process all or even a specific portion of Gemini card transactions.

The distinction between exploration and commercial deployment remains important as financial institutions experiment with blockchain settlement.

Gemini’s XRP Rewards Card Is a Separate Product

Gemini also operates an XRP-related Mastercard product, but it serves a different purpose.

The card allows eligible users to receive rewards in XRP.

That customer-facing rewards program should not be confused with the separate RLUSD settlement initiative involving Mastercard, WebBank and Gemini.

The two projects involve different functions:

XRP rewards concern customer incentives and card benefits, while RLUSD settlement concerns how participating financial institutions could settle obligations within the payments ecosystem.

Both demonstrate growing interaction between traditional payment infrastructure and digital assets, but they should not be treated as the same integration.

The Hackathon Could Highlight New Financial Applications

The event’s agentic-finance and lending categories also point toward some of the areas where blockchain developers are increasingly looking for practical use cases.

Agentic finance could allow software systems to execute transactions according to predefined rules or manage financial operations with limited human intervention.

For example, an AI agent could potentially monitor market conditions, manage a treasury or initiate a payment when certain conditions are satisfied.

Lending applications could similarly use blockchain infrastructure to automate collateral management, settlement and other financial processes.

The open track gives developers greater flexibility to experiment with additional applications that take advantage of XRPL’s transaction infrastructure.

Mastercard’s involvement gives those experiments additional visibility within the traditional financial sector.

Traditional Payments and Blockchain Infrastructure Are Converging

The sponsorship arrives at a time when major payment companies are increasingly exploring stablecoins and tokenized assets.

For traditional financial institutions, blockchain networks can potentially provide faster settlement, programmable transactions and continuous operating hours.

For blockchain networks, partnerships with established financial companies can provide access to regulated institutions and established payment infrastructure.

That creates a two-way convergence.

Traditional finance gains access to programmable digital settlement, while blockchain ecosystems gain pathways into existing financial networks.

Mastercard’s involvement with XRPL therefore represents more than a developer-event sponsorship in isolation. It fits into a wider strategy in which major financial companies are evaluating where blockchain infrastructure can complement existing payment systems.

Commercial Adoption Still Requires Separate Confirmation

The next immediate milestone is the Oct. 24–25 XRP Ledger Hackathon in New York.

More details about registration, judging, sponsor participation and developer requirements are expected as the event approaches.

Any resulting Mastercard product or commercial integration would require a separate announcement from Mastercard and the relevant project or financial institutions.

For now, the confirmed development is straightforward: Mastercard is sponsoring an XRP Ledger hackathon while separately pursuing blockchain-based stablecoin settlement that includes RLUSD and the XRP Ledger.

That combination puts Mastercard closer to the XRPL developer ecosystem, but it should not yet be interpreted as a confirmed large-scale deployment of Mastercard payments on the XRP Ledger.
