Here’s What Happened in Crypto Today

Here’s What Happened in Crypto Today

Crypto markets are being shaped by a mix of regulatory developments, corporate Bitcoin strategy and emerging technology risks. Today’s key stories include the White House pushing to advance the CLARITY Act in September, Strategy selling Bitcoin to fund an STRC share buyback, and new warnings that a future quantum-powered attack could resemble an unexplained wallet theft.

White House Pushes to Get CLARITY Act Over the Finish Line in September

The Trump administration remains committed to passing the CLARITY Act in September, despite the Senate postponing consideration of the legislation until after its August recess.

Patrick Witt, executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, said the administration would continue negotiating with Democrats ahead of the expected September vote. He also indicated that the negotiations could not continue indefinitely.

The Senate is expected to hold a cloture vote in mid-September, a procedural step requiring 60 votes to move the legislation forward.

If enacted, the CLARITY Act would establish a federal regulatory framework for digital assets, including clearer rules for determining whether crypto assets fall under securities or commodities laws and defining the responsibilities of the SEC and CFTC.

However, several issues remain unresolved. Democrats are seeking stricter ethics provisions related to President Trump’s crypto interests, while banking groups are pushing for changes to proposed rules governing rewards associated with stablecoins.

Strategy Sells 1,690 BTC to Fund $108.6M STRC Buyback

Strategy has once again tapped its Bitcoin treasury to finance a share repurchase, selling 1,690 BTC for approximately $108.6 million between Aug. 3 and Aug. 9.

The company used the proceeds to repurchase roughly 1.15 million shares of STRC, its variable-rate preferred stock that pays monthly dividends.

The transaction represents Strategy’s fourth disclosed Bitcoin sale of 2026 and brings its total Bitcoin sales for the year to 6,948 BTC.

Despite the sales, Strategy remains the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder, with 840,447 BTC acquired for a combined $63.36 billion.

The latest transaction highlights an increasingly important feature of Strategy’s treasury model: Bitcoin is not only being held as a long-term asset but is also being used as part of the company’s broader capital and financing strategy.

First Quantum-Powered Crypto Attack Could Look Like an Ordinary Wallet Hack

The first successful quantum attack against cryptocurrency may not be immediately recognizable as a quantum attack, according to Christopher Smith, co-founder and CEO of blockchain startup Quantus Network.

Rather than producing an obvious breach, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could potentially derive private keys from publicly exposed blockchain data and move funds without compromising a wallet, exchange or user device.

That could make a future quantum attack particularly difficult to identify.

The hypothetical event, often referred to as “Q-day,” describes the point at which quantum computers become powerful enough to break cryptographic systems currently securing major blockchains.

Smith warned that investigators might simply see a series of seemingly unrelated wallet breaches without finding conventional evidence of an intrusion.

The concern comes as advances in quantum computing and cryptographic research continue to reduce estimates of the resources that could eventually be required to attack the elliptic-curve cryptography used across major blockchain networks.

For the crypto industry, the challenge is not only preparing for a potential quantum breakthrough, but also ensuring that networks can distinguish a genuine cryptographic attack from the ordinary wallet compromises that already occur today.
