Hargreaves Lansdown Adds 9 Crypto ETNs for UK Investors

Hargreaves Lansdown Adds 9 Crypto ETNs for UK Investors

Hargreaves Lansdown has begun offering eligible customers access to nine exchange-traded notes linked to Bitcoin and Ether, giving investors on one of the UK’s largest retail investment platforms a regulated way to gain crypto price exposure without directly holding digital assets.

  • The platform has introduced nine Bitcoin and Ether ETNs through its Advanced Investing service.
  • Around 2 million customers could potentially access the products after completing eligibility and investor-protection requirements.
  • Investors must self-certify, pass an appropriateness assessment and observe a 24-hour cooling-off period.
  • The UK’s FCA restored retail access to qualifying crypto ETNs in October 2025, subject to safeguards.
  • ETNs provide exposure to cryptocurrency prices but do not give investors direct ownership of Bitcoin or Ether.

Hargreaves Lansdown Finally Enters the Crypto ETN Market

The newly available products come from major issuers including BlackRock’s iShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, CoinShares and Bitwise. According to the information provided, annual product fees range from zero to 0.35%.

Hargreaves Lansdown serves roughly two million investors, but the new crypto products are not automatically available to everyone. Access is limited to customers using its Advanced Investing service who successfully complete the required checks.

The move comes nearly a year after the Financial Conduct Authority reopened the UK retail market for qualifying crypto ETNs.

Hargreaves Lansdown had previously taken a cautious approach to digital assets. The company delayed its own rollout while developing customer testing procedures and additional safeguards.

Its current offering emphasizes that cryptocurrency-linked products are highly volatile and carry substantial risk, including the possibility of losing the entire investment.

Investors Must Clear Several Hurdles

Customers cannot immediately begin trading the new products.

First, they must identify themselves as advanced investors and complete an appropriateness assessment designed to determine whether they understand the nature and risks of crypto ETNs.

A mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period follows before customers can access the available instruments.

Investors also need either a Fund and Share Account or a self-invested personal pension to purchase, hold or sell the products.

Additional costs apply beyond the fees charged by individual ETN issuers. Hargreaves Lansdown charges a platform fee of 0.35% annually, capped at £12.50 per month for crypto ETN holdings. Trading charges vary depending on how frequently a customer deals.

Unlike cryptocurrency exchanges, these instruments trade during London Stock Exchange market hours rather than around the clock.

Crypto ETNs Are Not the Same as Owning Bitcoin

The new products give investors a way to track cryptocurrency prices without directly purchasing and controlling the underlying coins.

When an investor buys a crypto ETN, they acquire a financial instrument issued by a provider rather than Bitcoin or Ether itself. The issuer is responsible for arranging custody of the underlying digital assets.

As a result, investors do not receive private keys and cannot move the underlying cryptocurrency into a personal wallet.

This distinction creates a different risk profile from self-custody. Investors are exposed to the financial position and operational arrangements of the issuer, custodian, exchange and investment platform.

Returns can also differ from the performance of Bitcoin or Ether because of product fees, spreads and other structural costs.

FCA Rules Shape Retail Crypto Access

The FCA reopened retail access to qualifying crypto ETNs on Oct. 8, 2025, but did not simply allow platforms to offer the products without restrictions.

Eligible ETNs must meet regulatory requirements and be traded through recognized UK investment venues. The FCA also treats them as restricted mass-market investments, requiring platforms to apply measures such as appropriateness assessments, customer categorization, cooling-off periods and prominent risk disclosures.

Investment platforms are also restricted from using promotional incentives designed to encourage customers to purchase the products.

The regulatory framework is intended to give experienced retail investors access while maintaining additional protections around products considered particularly risky.

Will UK Investors Embrace Crypto ETNs?

Hargreaves Lansdown said it had seen continuing interest from customers asking about crypto ETNs, particularly among experienced investors.

However, inquiries do not necessarily translate into investment demand. Other UK platforms have reportedly experienced relatively modest retail participation, while restrictions on placing newly purchased crypto ETNs into standard stocks-and-shares ISAs could further limit adoption.

Nevertheless, the launch marks a significant expansion of access for Hargreaves Lansdown customers.

Instead of opening accounts with cryptocurrency exchanges or managing wallets themselves, eligible investors can now obtain regulated exposure to Bitcoin and Ether through an established UK investment platform.

Whether that convenience leads to meaningful retail demand will depend on cryptocurrency prices, investor appetite, regulatory developments and the range of digital-asset products Hargreaves Lansdown chooses to offer in the future.
