Fidelity Warns Bitcoin’s Bear Market May Still Have Further to Run

Bitcoin delivered its strongest monthly performance since November 2024 in August, but Fidelity Digital Assets cautions that the sharp rebound is not enough to confirm that the current crypto bear market has ended. The firm says Bitcoin could be approaching a broader recovery, but another downturn remains possible.

  • Bitcoin posted its strongest monthly performance since November 2024, according to Fidelity’s Q4 outlook.
  • Fidelity says August’s rally does not yet confirm a new bull market.
  • Bitcoin surged more than 25% during the third week of August as volatility returned.
  • The SEC’s comment period on its Regulation Crypto Assets proposal remains open until Oct. 20, 2026.
  • A Sept. 15 Senate procedural vote could determine whether the CLARITY Act moves toward formal debate.

Bitcoin’s August Rally Leaves the Market at a Crossroads

Bitcoin, Ethereum and several major altcoins experienced a significant rebound during August, according to Fidelity’s fourth-quarter digital asset outlook.

Bitcoin gained more than 25% during the third week of the month, while Ethereum climbed 34.1% and Solana rose 28% over the same period. The move followed several weeks of comparatively muted market activity between June and mid-August.

Despite the strength of the rebound, Fidelity believes investors should remain cautious. The firm said the recent advance could represent the beginning of a broader recovery, but it could also be another temporary rally occurring within an unfinished bear-market cycle.

In other words, the latest price surge has improved market conditions but has not yet provided enough evidence to declare the downturn finished.

November Could Become an Important Cycle Marker

Bitcoin’s historical four-year market cycle has led some investors to focus on November 2026 as a potential bottoming period.

The previous major Bitcoin bear-market low occurred in November 2022. Using a similar four-year interval would place another potential cycle low around November this year.

Fidelity, however, emphasized that Bitcoin’s historical cycles have not followed an exact timetable. Previous market bottoms therefore cannot be used as a reliable calendar for predicting the next one.

The company suggested that Bitcoin may have already established a low in July, but another decline could still occur later in the year, including around November or beyond.

Fidelity Digital Assets research executive Chris Kuiper also pointed to the importance of adoption trends. Rather than attempting to pinpoint an exact market bottom, he argued that longer-term adoption and holding behavior may provide more meaningful signals about the health of the market.

Rising Volatility Could Signal a Change in Market Conditions

Another factor Fidelity is watching is Bitcoin’s shift from an extended period of relatively low volatility into a powerful upward move.

Between June and the middle of August, crypto markets experienced comparatively subdued price movements. Fidelity’s analysis indicated that Bitcoin and other digital assets were trading near the lower end of their historical valuation ranges.

The subsequent surge represented a significant change in market behavior.

Bitcoin eventually moved above the $80,000 level before pulling back toward approximately $79,250. Rapid gains of this kind can create short-term overbought conditions and increase the possibility of consolidation.

Still, Fidelity viewed the change in volatility as potentially encouraging. Similar shifts have appeared around previous periods when crypto markets were transitioning away from prolonged weakness.

Kuiper also noted that several developments that might previously have triggered substantial selling pressure—including a hardware-wallet security incident and uncertainty surrounding US crypto legislation—failed to derail the broader August recovery.

That resilience could indicate that the market is becoming stronger, although Fidelity stopped short of treating it as confirmation that a new bull cycle has begun.

Crypto Adoption Remains Strong Despite Market Weakness

Fidelity also highlighted continued growth in underlying digital-asset activity during the period when cryptocurrency prices were under pressure.

Stablecoin usage, tokenized real-world assets and institutional participation continued expanding despite weakness in overall crypto market capitalization.

These metrics can provide insight into whether blockchain networks are gaining practical adoption. However, increasing usage does not automatically translate into higher token prices.

Institutional flows have also been uneven. During July, Ethereum investment products attracted more capital than Bitcoin products, suggesting that some institutional investors were shifting exposure between major crypto assets.

Bitcoin ETF demand subsequently strengthened in August, providing another potential source of support for the market.

Fidelity identified several factors that could help establish the foundation for another sustained crypto expansion, including institutional adoption, regulatory developments, monetary policy and broader blockchain applications.

For now, the firm’s message is cautious: Bitcoin’s August rebound is encouraging, but investors still need more evidence before concluding that the bear market has definitively ended.
