Block Surpasses Earnings Expectations After AI-Driven Workforce Restructuring

Block Inc., the fintech company led by Jack Dorsey, has delivered stronger-than-expected second-quarter results just months after implementing one of the technology sector’s most controversial workforce reductions. The company exceeded Wall Street forecasts across revenue, earnings, and gross profit, fueling debate over whether artificial intelligence can genuinely improve productivity while enabling leaner organizations.

The performance follows Block’s decision earlier this year to significantly reduce its workforce while increasing its reliance on AI-powered development and operational tools.

AI-Led Restructuring Sparks Industry Debate

In February, Block reduced its workforce by approximately 4,000 employees, shrinking its headcount from more than 10,000 to fewer than 6,000.

CEO Jack Dorsey said the layoffs were not driven by financial distress but by the company’s strategy to build smaller, more efficient teams supported by artificial intelligence.

According to Dorsey, AI enables employees to automate repetitive tasks, accelerate product development, and improve operational efficiency, allowing the company to accomplish more with fewer resources.

The announcement immediately divided investors and industry observers.

While Block’s shares rallied following the restructuring, critics questioned whether AI was the true motivation behind the layoffs or simply a justification for broader cost-cutting efforts.

Strong Quarterly Results Exceed Expectations

Block’s latest financial results suggest the company has maintained strong business momentum following its restructuring.

For the second quarter, the company reported:

  • Revenue of $6.62 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $6.49 billion.
  • Gross profit of $3.17 billion, representing a 25% year-over-year increase and exceeding internal guidance.
  • Adjusted earnings per share of $1.02, outperforming Wall Street estimates of $0.87.

The results indicate continued strength across Block’s payments ecosystem despite the significant reduction in workforce.

Square and Cash App Continue Growing

Several of Block’s core businesses posted encouraging operational performance during the quarter.

Square’s Gross Payment Volume (GPV) increased 10% year over year, marking its strongest growth rate in approximately three years.

Meanwhile, Cash App reached 59 million monthly transacting users in June, demonstrating continued consumer adoption.

Cash App’s gross profit climbed 31% to approximately $1.97 billion, supported in part by the popularity of new features, including the company’s Cash App Magic Wand payment tools.

AI Improving Product Development

Block executives attributed much of the company’s operational improvement to increased use of artificial intelligence throughout its software development process.

Business Lead Owen Jennings said the company released more new product features during the first half of 2026 than it had during the same period a year earlier.

According to Jennings, AI has enabled engineering teams to develop higher-quality products at a significantly faster pace while improving overall efficiency across the organization.

Company Raises Full-Year Outlook

Following the stronger-than-expected quarter, Block increased its financial guidance for the remainder of the year.

The company now expects:

  • Full-year gross profit of approximately $12.51 billion, up from its previous forecast of $12.33 billion.
  • Adjusted earnings per share of $4.02, compared with earlier guidance of $3.85.

The upgraded outlook reflects management’s confidence that productivity gains and business growth will continue throughout the year.

AI and Workforce Reduction Remain Controversial

Despite the positive financial results, Block’s restructuring continues to fuel broader debate across the technology industry.

Shortly before the layoffs, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned that some companies were engaging in what he described as “AI washing” by attributing workforce reductions to artificial intelligence when the underlying motivation was simply cost optimization.

Some analysts also pointed to Block’s ongoing regulatory and compliance challenges as additional factors that may have influenced its restructuring strategy.

The company has consistently maintained that its workforce changes were part of a long-term operational transformation rather than a response to financial weakness.

A Test Case for the AI Era

Block’s performance arrives amid a broader wave of technology companies reducing headcount while investing heavily in artificial intelligence.

Major firms including Amazon, Meta, Oracle, and Dell have all announced workforce reductions alongside expanding AI initiatives.

However, few companies have paired large-scale layoffs with such a strong combination of revenue growth, earnings outperformance, and upgraded financial guidance.

Whether Block’s strategy becomes a blueprint for the wider technology industry will depend on whether other companies can demonstrate similar productivity gains and sustained business performance.

For now, the company’s latest results provide one of the strongest examples to date of a business attempting to combine AI adoption with organizational restructuring while continuing to deliver robust financial growth.
