World Raises $52.5 Million to Expand Proof-of-Humanity Infrastructure in the AI Era

World Raises $52.5 Million to Expand Proof-of-Humanity Infrastructure in the AI Era

World, the digital identity project formerly known as Worldcoin, has raised $52.5 million through a strategic sale of locked WLD tokens, strengthening its efforts to build proof-of-humanity infrastructure as artificial intelligence and autonomous software agents become increasingly prevalent across the internet.

The latest funding round brings the company’s total capital raised to $492.5 million and underscores growing investor confidence in digital identity technologies designed to distinguish verified humans from AI-generated accounts and automated bots.

The strategic round was led by Pantera Capital, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto.

Building Identity Infrastructure for an AI-Driven Internet

Rather than positioning itself solely as a cryptocurrency or digital wallet platform, World is developing what it believes will become a foundational identity layer for the next generation of the internet.

As artificial intelligence systems become increasingly capable of generating content, interacting with users and operating autonomously online, verifying whether a participant is a real human is emerging as one of the biggest challenges facing digital platforms.

World aims to address that problem through World ID, a privacy-focused digital identity credential that enables users to prove they are unique human beings without revealing personal information.

The system is designed to help online platforms distinguish verified individuals from AI agents while preserving user privacy.

Orb Hardware Uses Zero-Knowledge Biometric Verification

At the centre of World’s identity system is the Orb, a specialised biometric device that verifies an individual’s uniqueness through iris scanning.

Unlike traditional identity verification systems that store sensitive biometric information, World says its platform uses zero-knowledge cryptography to confirm a person’s uniqueness without exposing or sharing the underlying biometric data.

Once verification is complete, users receive a World ID, an onchain credential that can be used across compatible applications and digital services.

The approach seeks to balance identity verification with privacy, allowing users to prove they are human without disclosing personal identity details.

New Funding Will Expand World ID Adoption

World plans to use the newly raised capital to accelerate the deployment of World ID across a broader range of digital services.

The company intends to expand integrations with enterprise software platforms, consumer applications and blockchain ecosystems where identity verification is becoming increasingly important.

The funding will also support adoption within emerging agentic AI workflows, where autonomous software agents increasingly interact with financial services, decentralised applications and online marketplaces.

As AI systems take on more responsibilities, distinguishing between authorised human users and autonomous software may become an essential requirement for many digital platforms.

AI Is Creating a New Trust Challenge

The rapid advancement of generative AI has dramatically increased the volume of automated content, synthetic media and AI-powered digital interactions across the internet.

While these technologies offer significant productivity benefits, they also create new security challenges.

Social media platforms, online marketplaces, financial applications and decentralised networks increasingly face risks from sophisticated bots capable of impersonating real users, spreading misinformation, committing fraud or manipulating online activity.

This growing complexity has elevated proof-of-humanity from a niche blockchain concept into a broader cybersecurity and digital trust challenge.

Companies across the technology industry are now exploring various methods for verifying genuine human participation without compromising user privacy.

World Chain Strengthens Human-Centric Blockchain Applications

The funding also supports continued development of World Chain, the project’s dedicated Layer-2 blockchain network.

World Chain is designed to prioritise verified human users while providing infrastructure capable of supporting identity-aware decentralised applications.

By combining blockchain settlement with privacy-preserving identity verification, the platform aims to enable applications where developers can distinguish between humans and automated systems without relying on centralised identity providers.

Potential use cases include decentralised finance, online voting, digital payments, social platforms, gaming, content creation and AI-powered marketplaces.

Investors See Growing Demand for Digital Identity

The participation of several leading crypto investment firms reflects increasing interest in digital identity as one of blockchain’s emerging growth sectors.

While cryptocurrencies initially focused on decentralised payments and financial services, identity verification is becoming an increasingly important component of Web3 infrastructure.

As governments, enterprises and technology companies continue integrating artificial intelligence into everyday digital services, trusted methods of verifying human users are expected to become increasingly valuable.

Blockchain-based identity systems offer one possible approach by allowing users to maintain control over their credentials while reducing reliance on centralised databases.

Proof of Humanity Could Become Core Internet Infrastructure

World’s latest funding round illustrates a broader shift in the digital economy.

The challenge is no longer simply connecting people to online services—it is increasingly about ensuring those participants are genuine humans in an internet populated by increasingly capable AI agents.

By combining zero-knowledge cryptography, biometric verification and blockchain technology, World is positioning itself as a provider of trust infrastructure for the AI era.

If AI-generated content and autonomous agents continue expanding across digital ecosystems, proof-of-humanity systems like World ID could evolve from optional verification tools into essential infrastructure supporting secure online commerce, decentralised applications and human-centric digital interactions.

With nearly $500 million now raised, World is accelerating its ambition to build a privacy-preserving identity layer capable of supporting the next generation of the internet, where verifying human authenticity may become just as important as verifying financial transactions.
