OpenAI is rolling out Health in ChatGPT to eligible U.S. users, introducing a more personalized way for people to understand medical records, track health changes, interpret test results, and prepare for conversations with healthcare professionals.
The new experience allows users to optionally connect Apple Health and supported medical records, giving ChatGPT access to relevant personal health context with the user’s permission. The goal is to bring information that is often fragmented across hospital portals, health apps, wearables, lab reports, and medical records into a more understandable conversational experience.
OpenAI says more than 300 million people use ChatGPT for health-related questions each week, ranging from interpreting laboratory results to understanding what happened during a medical appointment.
ChatGPT can now use connected health data as context
One of the biggest changes is ChatGPT’s ability to reason across health information that users choose to connect.
Instead of repeatedly uploading reports or explaining their medical history, users can allow ChatGPT to consider information such as medications, lab results, previous medical visits, sleep patterns, activity, and workouts when answering relevant questions.
For example, someone could ask ChatGPT to compare a recent laboratory result with previous tests, summarize what has changed since their last appointment, or explore patterns between sleep, exercise, and daily routines.
The system can also use relevant health context in ordinary conversations outside the dedicated Health section.
If a user is searching for meals, for example, ChatGPT could account for a relevant dietary restriction. If someone is planning physical activities, it could consider a recent injury when suggesting lower-impact options, provided the user has allowed access to that information.
Health moves beyond a separate ChatGPT experience
OpenAI initially tested Health as a dedicated environment within ChatGPT.
However, early usage revealed that health-related questions frequently emerged naturally during other conversations.
According to OpenAI, more than 70% of health-related conversations among early users occurred outside the dedicated Health experience.
As a result, users can now choose to allow relevant connected health information to be used across ChatGPT conversations rather than having to enter a separate Health workspace each time.
The Health section in the sidebar remains the central place for managing connected accounts, reviewing recent information and trends, browsing synced records, accessing suggested prompts, and returning to previous health conversations.
GPT-5.6 Sol strengthens health reasoning
OpenAI says it has continued improving the models used for health-related conversations.
GPT-5.5 Instant brought improved health capabilities to free users, including better recognition of situations where professional or urgent care may be necessary, clearer explanations of uncertainty, and stronger requests for missing context.
For paid users, GPT-5.6 Sol is positioned as OpenAI’s strongest model for more complex health questions.
The model is designed to reason across multiple pieces of information, explain medical documents in accessible language, analyze changes in laboratory results over time, help users understand options discussed by doctors, and prepare questions for follow-up appointments.
OpenAI says it works with hundreds of physicians worldwide to develop realistic evaluation scenarios covering areas such as accuracy, safety, communication, context awareness, completeness, and appropriate escalation to professional care.
The company emphasizes that ChatGPT can still make mistakes and should support rather than replace qualified medical professionals.
Privacy and user control are central to the health experience
Because medical information is particularly sensitive, OpenAI says Health includes additional privacy and security protections.
According to the company, connected medical records, Apple Health information, and conversations that use that connected data are not used to train OpenAI’s foundation models or target advertising.
Users also control when ChatGPT can access connected health information.
By default, ChatGPT asks permission before using medical records or Apple Health data to personalize a response. Users can approve access individually or choose to allow ongoing access and later change that preference.
Connected accounts can also be disconnected. OpenAI says synced data from a disconnected source is deleted from its systems within 30 days, although information already included in existing conversation history remains until those conversations are deleted.
Apple Health, medical records and other services can be connected
Users do not need to connect personal data to ask ChatGPT general health questions.
Those who want more personalized responses can choose to connect supported sources including Apple Health, medical records from participating U.S. healthcare systems, One Medical, and Function Health.
Wearables, fitness platforms, and nutrition apps that share information through Apple Health may also contribute relevant data, depending on what each service makes available.
Once connected and synchronized, users can ask health-related questions anywhere in ChatGPT. They can also explicitly request the use of their connected health context when needed.
Health in ChatGPT begins U.S. rollout
Health is beginning to roll out to logged-in ChatGPT users aged 18 and older in the United States, initially across web and iOS.
The experience is available across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, although specific model capabilities can vary by subscription tier. Health is not currently available in Codex.
The launch represents a significant expansion of ChatGPT from answering general health questions toward helping users make sense of their own fragmented health information.
Rather than positioning AI as a replacement for doctors, OpenAI is framing Health as a layer between complex medical information and the individual, helping users understand their records, identify changes, prepare better questions, and have more informed conversations with healthcare professionals.
