Coinbase’s Base Network Restores Operations Following Temporary Blockchain Outage

Coinbase’s Base Network Restores Operations Following Temporary Blockchain Outage

Coinbase-backed Layer-2 blockchain Base has resumed normal operations after a technical issue temporarily halted block production for nearly two hours, causing a brief disruption across the network.

The incident has drawn attention due to Base’s position as one of the largest and most active Ethereum scaling networks.

Consensus Issue Triggered Network Interruption

According to the Base development team, the outage was caused by a consensus-related error that resulted in an invalid block being sequenced onto the network.

The issue prevented validators from producing new blocks, effectively pausing blockchain activity until engineers isolated and resolved the problem.

After identifying the fault, the team restored healthy block production and confirmed that network infrastructure across the ecosystem had successfully synchronized.

Network Returns to Normal

Following the recovery, Base announced that transactions were once again processing normally and that services throughout the ecosystem had resumed.

Developers stated they are conducting a full investigation into the incident and plan to publish a detailed post-mortem explaining what caused the disruption and how similar issues can be prevented in the future.

User Funds Remain Secure

Despite the interruption, Base emphasized that user assets were never at risk during the outage.

The network’s creator, Jesse Pollak, reassured the community that all funds remained safe throughout the incident while acknowledging that maintaining uninterrupted uptime is essential for blockchain infrastructure intended to support global financial applications.

He added that the outage would serve as an opportunity to further strengthen the network’s reliability.

Rare Downtime for a Major Layer-2

Service interruptions of this scale remain relatively uncommon for Base.

The Ethereum Layer-2 network last experienced a significant outage in August 2025, when block production was interrupted for approximately half an hour.

Since then, Base has grown into one of Ethereum’s leading scaling solutions, processing large volumes of transactions for decentralized applications, payments, and on-chain services.

Reliability Remains a Key Focus

As blockchain adoption continues to expand, network stability has become an increasingly important factor for developers, institutions, and users alike.

Incidents such as this highlight the technical challenges involved in operating high-performance Layer-2 infrastructure while reinforcing the importance of continuous monitoring, rapid incident response, and transparent communication.

With services fully restored, Base’s immediate priority is identifying the root cause of the outage and implementing improvements to strengthen network resilience as adoption continues to grow.
