Coinbase Expands Machine Commerce With USDC Payments for AI Agents

Coinbase Expands Machine Commerce With USDC Payments for AI Agents

Coinbase is taking another step toward the emerging AI-powered digital economy by enabling businesses to accept payments directly from autonomous AI agents using USD Coin (USDC). The new capability, available through Coinbase Business, allows software agents to independently purchase goods and services using the x402 open payment standard, eliminating the need for traditional human-led checkout processes.

The move reflects Coinbase’s growing belief that AI agents will become active participants in the global economy, capable of managing wallets, making purchases and interacting with businesses without human intervention.

AI Agents Can Now Pay Businesses Directly

The new feature integrates seamlessly into existing Coinbase Business accounts, allowing merchants to receive payments from both human customers and AI agents through a single platform.

Businesses do not need to build separate payment infrastructure or dedicated checkout flows for AI transactions. Instead, companies can manage incoming payments, reconcile transactions and convert received USDC using the same tools already available for conventional customers.

According to Siddharth Coelho-Prabhu, Head of Coinbase Business, the update effectively enables merchants to sell products and digital services directly to autonomous software agents.

As AI systems become increasingly capable of performing tasks on behalf of users, Coinbase aims to provide the financial infrastructure that allows these agents to transact independently.

Coinbase Sees AI Agents as the Next Major Internet Users

Coinbase believes autonomous AI systems will become one of the fastest-growing participants in online commerce.

The company revealed that traffic generated by AI agents has recently surpassed human traffic on parts of its Base developer documentation, reinforcing its view that machine-driven internet activity is expanding rapidly.

This trend has encouraged Coinbase to position USDC as the preferred settlement asset for machine-to-machine transactions.

AI agents can create blockchain wallets, receive funds, and make payments across Base and other supported blockchain networks without relying on traditional banking or payment systems.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong described the development as part of the emerging “agentic economy,” arguing that autonomous software will require entirely new financial infrastructure designed specifically for machine commerce.

Stablecoins Could Become the Backbone of Machine Commerce

Stablecoins are increasingly being viewed as an ideal payment mechanism for autonomous systems.

Unlike conventional payment methods, blockchain-based stablecoins can settle transactions almost instantly, operate continuously and remove many of the limitations associated with traditional banking hours and card payment networks.

For AI agents making frequent, low-value or automated transactions, these characteristics provide significant advantages.

Coinbase believes USDC is well positioned to become the primary settlement layer for this new economic model, where software applications interact and transact directly with one another.

Businesses using Coinbase Business can also earn 3.35% rewards on eligible idle USDC balances, while benefiting from the absence of traditional card chargeback risks associated with credit card payments. However, foreign exchange and other transaction-related fees may still apply depending on the payment flow.

Early Adoption Focuses on Digital Services

Machine commerce is already beginning to emerge across several digital industries.

According to Coinbase, AI agents are actively purchasing access to services such as application programming interfaces (APIs), cloud computing resources, domain names and other online developer tools.

These transactions typically involve software automatically obtaining the resources needed to complete tasks without requiring direct human approval for every purchase.

As AI assistants become more autonomous, similar payment capabilities could eventually expand into subscriptions, software licensing, digital content, infrastructure services and enterprise workflows.

Coinbase Introduces More Powerful Trading Tools for AI

Alongside agent payments, Coinbase has expanded the capabilities of Coinbase for Agents, its platform that allows AI systems to interact with users’ trading accounts.

The latest update enables AI agents to monitor live market conditions, view open orders, analyse order book depth and track real-time price and trading volume data.

Users can also issue natural-language trading instructions, allowing AI agents to execute predefined actions such as selling Bitcoin below a specified price, cancelling orders after a set period or responding automatically to changing market conditions.

Coinbase emphasised that these automated actions remain subject to spending limits and permissions established by the account owner, ensuring users maintain control over their funds.

Developers Receive New Tools for Building AI Commerce

To encourage broader adoption, Coinbase has also released a software development kit (SDK) for its x402 payment protocol.

The toolkit enables developers to integrate AI-powered payment functionality into APIs, web services and AI applications with minimal coding requirements.

Coinbase has also expanded its managed wallet infrastructure, allowing developers to implement spending controls, payment limits and other safeguards when deploying autonomous AI agents.

The company hopes these tools will accelerate adoption among developers building the next generation of AI-powered applications.

Coinbase Bets on an Internet Built for Humans and Machines

Coinbase’s latest announcement reflects a broader strategic vision that extends beyond cryptocurrency trading.

The exchange believes the future internet will increasingly serve two distinct types of users: people and autonomous software acting on their behalf.

As AI systems become more capable of researching information, purchasing services, negotiating contracts and managing digital assets, demand for native blockchain payment infrastructure is expected to grow.

By combining stablecoin payments, programmable wallets and open payment standards, Coinbase is positioning itself to provide the financial rails for this emerging machine economy.

If autonomous AI adoption continues to accelerate, transactions between software agents and businesses could become a significant new category of digital commerce one where stablecoins and blockchain networks play a central role in enabling instant, programmable and borderless payments.
