Zondacrypto Chief Reportedly Cooperates With Polish Prosecutors in Fraud Case

Przemysław Kral, the head of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto, is reportedly cooperating with Polish prosecutors as investigators examine allegations of large-scale fraud and potential financial links to right-wing political figures.

Recent reports from Polish media say Kral has been providing extensive explanations to prosecutors and has obtained the status of a “small crown witness,” a legal mechanism that can provide benefits to a suspect who cooperates with authorities. (Rzeczpospolita)

The reports indicate that Kral’s cooperation could provide investigators with information about the operation of Zondacrypto, the movement of customer funds and its reported relationships with political organizations.

Customer losses estimated at billions of zlotys

According to reports citing the investigation, prosecutors now estimate potential customer losses at at least 2.4 billion Polish zlotys, equivalent to roughly $650 million.

Investigators reportedly suspect that only part of the money deposited by customers was used for cryptocurrency investments, while other funds may have been transferred to accounts controlled by people associated with the exchange’s management. These remain allegations under investigation. (onet.pl)

The estimated losses are substantially higher than the initial figure disclosed by Polish prosecutors in April. At that time, authorities said the suspected losses exceeded 350 million zlotys and that the number of complaints from affected customers was continuing to rise. (Rzeczpospolita)

Kral’s reported negotiations with prosecutors

Kral had reportedly been discussing potential cooperation with Polish authorities for several months.

Polish media reported that he held meetings with prosecutors in Poland, Sicily and countries in the Persian Gulf as negotiations over his potential legal status progressed. Earlier reports also described a meeting between Kral and a Polish prosecutor in a Gulf country. (onet.pl)

By late August, reports indicated that Kral was formally providing detailed testimony to investigators.

The significance of his cooperation could extend beyond the alleged financial misconduct at Zondacrypto. His testimony may also shed light on the exchange’s relationships with political organizations and individuals, although any claims arising from his statements would still need to be independently investigated and established by authorities.

Political connections under scrutiny

Zondacrypto has previously been linked to political and media activities in Poland.

The exchange was reportedly a major sponsor of CPAC Poland, held shortly before the second round of the country’s presidential election. Polish media and parliamentary statements have also highlighted financial transfers involving organizations associated with prominent right-wing politicians.

Reports have cited payments connected to foundations linked to Zbigniew Ziobro and Przemysław Wipler, as well as significant advertising spending with Telewizja Republika.

These financial relationships have attracted renewed attention as investigators examine the broader activities and funding networks surrounding Zondacrypto. The existence of payments or sponsorship arrangements does not by itself establish wrongdoing.

The unresolved Bitcoin wallet issue

Kral has remained largely absent from public communications since April, when he disclosed that Zondacrypto was unable to access a cold wallet reportedly containing approximately 4,500 Bitcoin.

He previously denied allegations that he had misappropriated customer funds.

Kral said control of the wallet was connected to former Zondacrypto founder and CEO Sylwester Suszek, who has been missing since 2022. The circumstances surrounding the wallet and Suszek’s disappearance remain separate issues within the wider investigation.

Investigation continues

The developments surrounding Kral mark a significant shift in the Zondacrypto investigation. His reported cooperation could give Polish authorities additional information about the exchange’s financial operations, customer funds and relationships with outside organizations.

However, many of the claims currently circulating come from media reports and sources familiar with the investigation. They should not be treated as final findings of guilt.

With prosecutors continuing to examine the alleged losses and the movement of funds, Kral’s testimony could become an important part of the investigation into one of Poland’s most significant cryptocurrency-related financial cases.
