A white-hat blockchain security researcher has successfully helped recover nearly $2 million worth of Ether that had remained trapped inside a faulty smart contract from a failed 2016 ICO.
The recovery effort, led by a pseudonymous security expert known as 0xflorent, unlocked approximately 1,003 ETH belonging to 48 investors who participated in the Hong Coin (HONG) token sale nearly a decade ago.
A Decade-Old Smart Contract Bug
Hong Coin launched its ICO in 2016 with the goal of creating a decentralized venture capital fund governed by a community-led DAO. The project aimed to allow token holders to vote on and fund promising blockchain startups.
However, the fundraising campaign failed to reach its target, meaning investor funds were supposed to be automatically returned.
Unfortunately, a flaw in the smart contract’s refund mechanism prevented that process from working correctly.
As a result, investors’ Ether remained permanently locked inside the contract for almost ten years.
How the Funds Were Recovered
According to 0xflorent, the issue stemmed from a hidden vulnerability within an administrative function of the smart contract.
Working alongside the original project creators, the researcher identified a way to trigger the refund process by exploiting an integer overflow bug in the contract’s administration logic.
This allowed investor balances to be reset in a way that reactivated the dormant refund mechanism and released the trapped funds.
Importantly, the recovery was conducted transparently and with the cooperation of the original team, making it a rare example of a white-hat intervention benefiting long-forgotten investors.
Investors Begin Receiving Refunds
Blockchain records show that the refund process has already started.
One investor reportedly recovered 96 ETH, currently valued at roughly $192,000, while other participants have also begun receiving their long-overdue funds.
In total, 48 investors are expected to benefit from the recovery effort.
A Reminder of Early Smart Contract Risks
The incident highlights the challenges faced by many early blockchain projects that launched during the ICO boom.
In the early years of Ethereum, smart contract development standards were still evolving, and many projects deployed code with limited security testing or auditing.
As a result, millions of dollars worth of digital assets have remained inaccessible over the years due to coding errors, forgotten wallets, and flawed contract designs.
Not the First Recovery
This is not the first time 0xflorent has helped recover stranded crypto assets.
Earlier this year, the researcher also assisted in recovering funds from another failed ICO dating back to 2018, as well as helping a user retrieve assets trapped in a cross-chain transfer protocol.
Why It Matters
The recovery demonstrates both the permanence and resilience of blockchain technology.
While smart contract bugs can lock funds indefinitely, the transparent nature of public blockchains means that vulnerabilities can sometimes be discovered and responsibly exploited years later to return assets to their rightful owners.
For the affected Hong Coin investors, what appeared to be a permanent loss has finally become a successful recovery nearly ten years after the project’s collapse.
