Steak ‘n Shake Embraces Bitcoin as Sales Rise and Crypto Strategy Expands

Steak ‘n Shake is taking its Bitcoin strategy well beyond accepting cryptocurrency at the checkout. The burger chain says Bitcoin users have contributed to stronger sales and lower transaction costs, while the company has also begun building a Bitcoin reserve and offering employees Bitcoin-linked rewards.

  • Steak ‘n Shake says Bitcoin adoption has helped support restaurant sales and operating savings.
  • Its parent company reported 13.8% same-store sales growth in the second quarter of 2026.
  • Hourly employees at company-operated locations receive a $0.21-per-hour Bitcoin bonus.
  • The company has shifted from simply accepting Bitcoin to incorporating the asset into its broader business strategy.

Steak ‘n Shake Puts Bitcoin at the Center of Its Strategy

Steak ‘n Shake, the American burger chain established in 1934, is increasingly presenting itself as a Bitcoin-focused company rather than simply a restaurant that accepts cryptocurrency.

The company began accepting Bitcoin payments at its restaurants in May 2025, and more than a year later says the initiative has delivered benefits beyond payment convenience.

Steak ‘n Shake argues that Bitcoin users have shown unusually strong loyalty to the brand. According to the company, increased customer activity combined with savings from Bitcoin payments has allowed it to reinvest in areas such as food quality.

The strategy has also coincided with strong same-store sales performance. Biglari Holdings, Steak ‘n Shake’s parent company, reported a 13.8% increase in domestic same-store sales during the second quarter of 2026 across company-operated and franchise-partner-operated restaurants.

Bitcoin Moves From the Checkout Counter to the Balance Sheet

Steak ‘n Shake’s Bitcoin strategy initially focused on payments.

The chain began processing Bitcoin transactions through the Lightning Network, a Bitcoin-based layer designed to enable faster and less expensive transactions, particularly for smaller payments.

The company says the reduced transaction costs associated with cryptocurrency payments have contributed to operating savings. Instead of simply converting all Bitcoin received from customers into traditional currency, Steak ‘n Shake has also directed Bitcoin proceeds toward a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

That move represents a significant change in strategy. Bitcoin is no longer being treated solely as an alternative payment method; it has become part of the company’s broader financial approach.

The company subsequently increased its Bitcoin exposure through two purchases in January, adding $10 million and another $5 million in notional value.

Employees Can Earn Bitcoin Through Their Work

Steak ‘n Shake has also incorporated Bitcoin into its employee benefits.

Since March 1, eligible hourly employees at company-operated restaurants have been able to earn a Bitcoin bonus equivalent to 21 cents for every hour worked.

The reward is subject to a two-year vesting period, giving employees an opportunity to accumulate exposure to Bitcoin over time rather than receiving the benefit as immediate cash compensation.

The initiative was developed in partnership with Fold, extending the company’s Bitcoin strategy from customers and corporate finances to its workforce.

Customers Have Received Bitcoin Rewards Too

Steak ‘n Shake has also experimented with Bitcoin-based customer incentives.

In October 2025, Fold and Steak ‘n Shake introduced a limited-time $5 Bitcoin reward at approximately 400 U.S. locations.

Customers purchasing qualifying Bitcoin-themed menu items could submit their receipts and receive a redemption code through the Fold application.

The promotion gave customers an additional reason to interact with Bitcoin while reinforcing the restaurant’s broader cryptocurrency branding.

Strong Restaurant Sales, Mixed Overall Earnings

Steak ‘n Shake’s Bitcoin strategy comes against a mixed financial backdrop for its parent company.

Biglari Holdings reported $6.3 million in pretax operating earnings during the second quarter of 2026, compared with $3.7 million during the same quarter a year earlier.

However, results for the first six months of the year were weaker. Pretax operating earnings totaled approximately $2.1 million, compared with $13.7 million during the corresponding period of 2025.

The figures show that while the restaurant business has recorded notable same-store sales growth, the company’s overall financial performance involves several other businesses, including insurance and reinsurance, licensing and media, restaurants, and oil and gas.

From Bitcoin Payments to a Corporate Strategy

Steak ‘n Shake’s approach illustrates how cryptocurrency adoption can extend beyond simply allowing customers to pay with digital assets.

The company has gradually incorporated Bitcoin into payments, customer promotions, employee compensation, and corporate treasury management.

Its reported sales growth has provided additional momentum for the strategy, while the Bitcoin reserve and employee bonus program demonstrate a longer-term commitment to integrating the cryptocurrency into the business.

Whether the approach produces lasting financial advantages remains to be seen, particularly as Bitcoin prices fluctuate and the costs and benefits of maintaining a cryptocurrency reserve evolve.

For now, Steak ‘n Shake has made its position clear: Bitcoin is no longer just a payment option at the burger chain—it has become an increasingly important part of its business identity and financial strategy.
