Stablecoin Payments Hit Record $1.79 Trillion as Institutional Adoption Accelerates

Stablecoin Payments Hit Record $1.79 Trillion as Institutional Adoption Accelerates

Stablecoins continue to strengthen their position as the backbone of the digital economy, with adjusted onchain transaction volume reaching a record $1.79 trillion in June 2026, according to the latest data from Visa’s Allium-powered analytics platform.

The milestone comes despite a challenging macroeconomic environment and a broader downturn across cryptocurrency markets, highlighting how stablecoins are increasingly being used for real-world payments, institutional settlements, and global financial transactions rather than purely for crypto trading.

Stablecoin Activity Reaches New All-Time High

June’s adjusted transaction volume surpassed the previous record of $1.78 trillion set in February 2026, marking the strongest month ever recorded for stablecoin settlement activity.

The data also represents:

  • 63% growth compared with May’s $1.1 trillion
  • 125% year-over-year increase
  • The highest monthly payment volume in stablecoin history

The figures suggest that digital dollars continue to gain traction even as broader cryptocurrency markets experience volatility.

Adjusted Data Paints a Clearer Picture

Unlike raw blockchain transaction figures, the adjusted metrics developed by Allium Labs, Visa, Artemis, and Castle Island Ventures filter out activity that does not represent genuine economic usage.

The methodology removes:

  • Exchange treasury transfers
  • High-frequency trading activity
  • Internal wallet movements
  • Automated smart contract loops
  • Other artificial blockchain transactions

This produces a more accurate measurement of real-world payment activity, including:

  • Business-to-business settlements
  • Cross-border payments
  • International remittances
  • Decentralized finance (DeFi) transactions
  • Corporate treasury transfers

With approximately $322 billion worth of stablecoins circulating globally, June’s figures indicate that the supply turned over roughly 5.5 times during the month—an indication of exceptionally strong payment activity.

USDC Emerges as the Institutional Settlement Leader

One of the report’s biggest findings is the growing dominance of Circle’s USDC in high-value financial settlements.

Although Tether (USDT) remains the world’s largest stablecoin by market capitalization, USDC processed approximately $1.21 trillion in adjusted transaction volume during June.

That represented roughly 67% of all adjusted stablecoin settlement volume.

Interestingly, USDC completed around 57 million transactions, significantly fewer than USDT, suggesting that the average transfer size was substantially larger.

Analysts believe this reflects increasing adoption among:

  • Financial institutions
  • Asset managers
  • Corporate treasuries
  • Enterprise payment providers
  • Institutional trading firms

USDT Continues to Dominate Retail Payments

While USDC has become the preferred stablecoin for institutional settlement, USDT continues to lead in retail payment activity.

During June:

  • USDT processed approximately $576 billion
  • Accounted for nearly 145 million individual transfers

The higher transaction count indicates that Tether remains the preferred digital dollar for:

  • Retail crypto traders
  • Emerging market payments
  • International remittances
  • Exchange liquidity
  • Everyday blockchain transactions

The report highlights an increasingly clear separation between institutional and retail stablecoin usage.

Base Overtakes Ethereum in Stablecoin Settlement

Another notable trend was the rise of Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain.

For the first time, Base narrowly surpassed Ethereum mainnet in adjusted stablecoin settlement volume.

Stablecoin Settlement by Network

  • Base: $565 billion (31.5%)
  • Ethereum Mainnet: $562 billion (31.4%)
  • Tron: $320 billion (18%)

The results demonstrate the growing importance of Layer-2 networks, which provide faster transaction speeds and significantly lower fees while maintaining Ethereum’s security.

Meanwhile, Tron continues to play a critical role in global retail payments and cross-border remittance markets.

Stablecoins Are Becoming Financial Infrastructure

The record transaction volume reflects a broader shift in how stablecoins are being used.

Rather than serving primarily as trading collateral inside cryptocurrency markets, digital dollars are increasingly functioning as global payment infrastructure.

Major financial institutions including Visa, Mastercard, global banks, fintech firms, and payment providers—are actively expanding stablecoin initiatives for settlement, treasury operations, and cross-border payments.

This growing institutional participation is helping stablecoins evolve into a parallel financial network capable of operating around the clock with near-instant settlement.

Why It Matters

The record $1.79 trillion in adjusted stablecoin transaction volume underscores the rapid maturation of digital dollar infrastructure. Despite broader weakness across cryptocurrency markets, stablecoins continue to experience accelerating real-world adoption as businesses, financial institutions, and payment providers increasingly rely on blockchain-based settlement.

The data also reveals an evolving market dynamic: USDC is emerging as the preferred settlement asset for institutions, while USDT continues to dominate retail activity. Combined with the rapid growth of Layer-2 networks like Base, these trends suggest that stablecoins are transitioning from crypto-native tools into essential components of the global financial system.
