KB Kookmin Bank, South Korea’s largest commercial bank, is set to launch a blockchain-powered cross-border payment service in August, marking another major step in the adoption of blockchain technology by traditional financial institutions.
The new service will leverage JPMorgan’s Kinexys platform to enable faster and more efficient US dollar payments for businesses engaged in international trade.
Blockchain to Power International Business Payments
The service is designed to support importers and exporters by streamlining cross-border transactions across 10 countries, including the United States, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Built on Kinexys—JPMorgan’s institutional blockchain platform formerly known as Onyx—the system aims to reduce settlement times while improving payment efficiency and transparency.
Initially, the platform will focus on US dollar transactions, helping businesses move funds more quickly across international markets.
Integration With SWIFT
Rather than replacing existing financial infrastructure, the blockchain service will integrate with the global SWIFT payments network.
The hybrid approach is expected to deliver near-instant cross-border payments and faster foreign exchange settlement while maintaining compatibility with existing banking systems.
The initiative demonstrates how major banks are increasingly combining blockchain technology with established financial networks instead of treating them as competing systems.
Growing Institutional Adoption of Blockchain
JPMorgan launched Kinexys to provide institutional-grade blockchain services covering payments, tokenisation and digital asset infrastructure.
The platform has become one of the world’s leading enterprise blockchain networks, allowing financial institutions to settle transactions more efficiently while reducing operational complexity.
KB Kookmin Bank’s adoption highlights the growing confidence among global banks in blockchain-based settlement technology for real-world financial services.
A Milestone for Asian Banking
According to S&P Global, KB Financial Group—the parent company of KB Kookmin Bank—is South Korea’s largest banking group by total assets, managing approximately $552.76 billion and ranking among the largest banks in the Asia-Pacific region.
Its decision to deploy blockchain-powered international payments reinforces the broader trend of traditional financial institutions embracing digital asset infrastructure to modernise global banking.
Blockchain Moves Further Into Mainstream Finance
The launch reflects the accelerating convergence between traditional finance and blockchain technology.
Rather than focusing solely on cryptocurrencies, banks are increasingly adopting blockchain to improve payment speed, reduce settlement risk and lower operational costs for enterprise customers.
As more major financial institutions integrate blockchain into core banking services, platforms like JPMorgan’s Kinexys are becoming an important bridge between conventional banking infrastructure and the next generation of digital financial networks.
