Stealth semiconductor startup Source Foundry has raised $400 million in fresh funding at a $5 billion valuation, bringing the total capital committed to the company by Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Situational Awareness fund to $500 million.
The latest round was led by Situational Awareness and adds to backing from prominent investors including Sequoia.
Founded just a year ago, Source Foundry is attempting to rethink the equipment and manufacturing processes that sit upstream of semiconductor fabrication plants, with its technology specifically designed around the demands of the rapidly expanding AI chip industry.
Targeting the Machinery Behind Advanced AI Chips
Source Foundry is taking aim at one of the most strategically important companies in the global semiconductor supply chain: ASML.
The Dutch company dominates the market for extreme ultraviolet, or EUV, lithography systems, which are essential for manufacturing many of the world’s most advanced processors.
These machines allow chipmakers to print extremely small circuit patterns onto silicon, making them a critical component in producing increasingly powerful AI accelerators.
Source Foundry’s approach is different.
Rather than simply competing with existing chip manufacturers, the startup is attempting to redesign the tools and manufacturing processes used before and around the fabrication stage, potentially creating an infrastructure layer better suited to AI-focused semiconductor production.
A $5B Bet on the AI Chip Supply Chain
The $400 million financing round values the one-year-old company at approximately $5 billion, an unusually large valuation for a startup that has only recently emerged from stealth.
The scale of the investment reflects growing expectations that AI will require fundamental changes throughout the semiconductor supply chain.
As demand for AI accelerators increases, chipmakers face mounting pressure to improve manufacturing efficiency, increase production capacity and develop new approaches to producing increasingly complex processors.
That creates opportunities not only for companies designing AI chips, but also for startups building the equipment and infrastructure required to manufacture them.
Aschenbrenner Doubles Down
The funding also stands out because of the timing of Aschenbrenner’s investment.
Situational Awareness has now committed approximately $500 million to Source Foundry, making the startup one of the fund’s most significant bets.
The latest investment reportedly came only days after Aschenbrenner’s hedge fund suffered a major setback, reportedly losing nearly two-thirds of its assets.
Despite that loss, the fund has continued to deploy substantial capital into Source Foundry, signaling strong conviction in the company’s long-term potential.
The Bigger Semiconductor Race
Source Foundry’s emergence highlights how the AI boom is expanding the competitive battlefield beyond Nvidia, AMD and other chip designers.
The next generation of AI computing will require advances across the entire semiconductor stack, from chip architecture and advanced packaging to manufacturing equipment and fabrication processes.
ASML currently occupies a uniquely powerful position within that ecosystem because of its dominance in advanced lithography.
Challenging that position, therefore, represents one of the most ambitious opportunities in the semiconductor industry.
Source Foundry is betting that the next generation of AI chips will require a fundamentally different manufacturing approach and it has now raised $400 million to prove it.
