Ripple is extending its support for blockchain research at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYU Abu Dhabi), renewing its University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI) partnership through 2027.
The renewed funding will support academic research, fintech education, student-led venture development and the expansion of blockchain applications being developed through the university’s research programs.
NYU Abu Dhabi announced the renewed grant on August 10, while Ripple Middle East and Africa Managing Director Reece Merrick highlighted the continuation of the partnership on August 12.
The university described the agreement as a renewed six-year grant supporting research led by professors Raša Karapandža and Yaw Nyarko, co-directors of the university’s Center for Technology, Economics and Development. NYU Abu Dhabi did not disclose the value of the latest grant.
Ripple previously said in 2024 that its total funding for the NYU Abu Dhabi partnership had exceeded $1 million.
Blockchain Research Moves Toward Real-World Applications
The next phase of the partnership will focus on examining whether decentralized technologies can improve market efficiency, reduce barriers to trade and expand access to economic opportunities.
Beyond academic research, the funding will support fintech education, early-stage venture development and forums designed to bring researchers together with policymakers and industry participants.
Students will also continue working with the XRP Ledger through courses and practical projects.
Ripple Senior Director of University Partnerships Lauren Weymouth described NYU Abu Dhabi as UBRI’s regional hub in the Middle East, reflecting the strategic importance Ripple places on the university within its global academic network.
Ripple launched UBRI in 2018 as an initiative designed to support blockchain and cryptocurrency research at universities. The company currently says the program includes more than 60 university partners across 27 countries, more than 800 new or expanded fintech courses and approximately 1,500 academic blockchain research projects.
The company has continued expanding the initiative globally, including a two-year, $200,000 partnership with Trinity College Dublin announced in 2025.
Volta Brings Blockchain Research to Ghanaian Agriculture
One of the most significant components of the renewed NYU Abu Dhabi program is the Volta Initiative, which applies blockchain infrastructure to trade involving smallholder farmers in Ghana.
Volta is a serverless mobile application designed to support transactions and trade among farmers and other participants in agricultural supply chains.
The next phase of the project is expected to expand Volta into additional regions while exploring financial tools related to credit and risk management.
The researchers see the project as an opportunity to examine how blockchain-based systems could address information gaps and improve trust between participants in economic transactions.
Professor Raša Karapandža said the continued funding enables researchers to combine economic theory with practical applications while working directly with the XRP Ledger. Professor Yaw Nyarko similarly emphasized the potential for blockchain systems to address information asymmetries and transaction-related trust issues.
However, these remain research objectives rather than established outcomes. The renewed grant is intended to test and develop these applications rather than represent a confirmation that blockchain has already solved the challenges being studied.
Students to Develop Blockchain Applications and Ventures
The partnership will also place a strong emphasis on hands-on education.
NYU Abu Dhabi plans to continue offering fintech coursework in which students design, develop and test blockchain applications. The program is also expected to support early-stage ventures emerging from the university’s research and educational activities.
This approach connects academic research with practical experimentation, giving students the opportunity to work with blockchain infrastructure while exploring potential commercial applications.
The university will also continue organizing forums that bring together academics, policymakers and industry participants. These events are intended to create a bridge between blockchain research, public policy and the rapidly developing financial technology sector.
Partnership Aligns With Ripple’s Expanding UAE Presence
The renewal comes as Ripple continues to strengthen its presence in the United Arab Emirates and the wider Middle East and Africa region.
Ripple expanded its Dubai headquarters in April 2026, creating additional capacity for the company to grow its regional team. The company has also been increasing its presence in regulated digital asset and payments markets across the region.
Its RLUSD stablecoin has also expanded its footprint in the UAE. The stablecoin surpassed $1 billion in supply on Ethereum after receiving recognition from Abu Dhabi Global Market’s Financial Services Regulatory Authority as an Accepted Fiat Referenced Token for eligible firms.
Ripple became the first blockchain payments company to receive a full license from the Dubai Financial Services Authority in March 2025.
The company has maintained its regional headquarters in Dubai since 2020, while its academic relationship with NYU Abu Dhabi began in 2021.
Academic Strategy Complements Ripple’s Commercial Expansion
The renewed partnership highlights two parallel aspects of Ripple’s strategy in the region.
On one side, the company is expanding its commercial and regulatory footprint through payments infrastructure, stablecoins and licensed digital asset services. On the other, it is investing in academic research and education aimed at developing the broader blockchain ecosystem.
The NYU Abu Dhabi partnership therefore represents more than a conventional university grant. It provides Ripple with an avenue to support research into practical blockchain applications while developing a pipeline of students, researchers and entrepreneurs familiar with the XRP Ledger and decentralized technologies.
For NYU Abu Dhabi, the partnership provides funding and infrastructure for research into blockchain’s potential role in finance, trade and economic development.
What Comes Next
The renewed agreement will keep the collaboration active through 2027, with the immediate priorities centered on expanding the Volta Initiative, continuing XRP Ledger research, developing student-led fintech projects and strengthening interaction between academia, policymakers and industry.
The agreement does not include a new token launch, additional regulatory approval or a new commercial financial product.
Instead, its significance lies in the continued development of blockchain research and education at a time when Ripple is simultaneously expanding its regulated commercial operations across the UAE and broader Middle East and Africa markets.
The partnership could provide a longer-term testing ground for blockchain applications in areas such as agricultural trade, financial inclusion, credit and risk management, while giving researchers an opportunity to assess where decentralized infrastructure can deliver measurable economic benefits.
