Digital asset infrastructure firm Fireblocks is accelerating its push into AI-powered finance with the launch of its new Agentic Payments Suite, while also joining the x402 Foundation — an industry initiative focused on building payment rails for AI agents.
The move signals growing momentum behind the idea that AI systems could soon become major participants in blockchain-based transactions and stablecoin payments.
Fireblocks Introduces Agentic Payments Suite
Fireblocks announced that its new platform is designed to support the full payment lifecycle for AI agents operating on blockchain networks.
The Agentic Payments Suite includes:
- Wallet infrastructure for AI agents
- Merchant payment acceptance tools
- Compliance and settlement capabilities
- Support for regulated financial institutions
The framework is specifically designed to integrate with Coinbase’s x402 protocol, which aims to become a standardized payment layer for AI-driven transactions.
Stablecoins at the Center of AI Commerce
Fireblocks believes stablecoins will play a central role in enabling machine-to-machine payments at scale.
According to Fireblocks co-founder and chief product officer Idan Ofrat, the widespread adoption of AI assistants could significantly increase stablecoin transaction activity if users begin delegating spending authority to autonomous agents.
Industry leaders including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire have also suggested that AI agents may eventually become the dominant users of blockchain infrastructure.
AI Agent Payments Begin Expanding
Several recent developments highlight the growing intersection between AI and crypto payments.
Earlier this month:
- Amazon Web Services integrated Coinbase’s x402 payment protocol into Amazon Bedrock AgentCore
- Oobit launched a Visa-backed virtual payment card allowing AI agents to make purchases using USDT
These integrations are helping build the infrastructure required for autonomous AI systems to transact online.
Adoption Still in Early Stages
Despite increasing interest, blockchain activity tied to AI agents remains relatively small.
Data from x402.org shows the protocol processed around $24.2 million in trading volume over the past 30 days — modest compared to broader crypto markets.
Ofrat acknowledged that the industry is still in its early infrastructure phase, comparing current development to the decades-long evolution of traditional payment networks.
Why Stablecoins Could Be Critical
Fireblocks argues that traditional banking systems and card networks may not be suitable for the future demands of AI-driven commerce.
The company believes stablecoins offer advantages such as:
- Instant settlement
- Programmable payments
- Cross-border functionality
- Machine-to-machine compatibility
According to Ofrat, blockchain-based digital assets may ultimately become the most practical solution for large-scale AI agent transactions.
Fireblocks Joins x402 Foundation
As part of the initiative, Fireblocks has officially joined the x402 Foundation, a growing coalition supporting the adoption of Coinbase’s x402 protocol as a universal payment infrastructure for AI systems.
The collaboration reflects a broader industry trend toward combining AI automation with blockchain-native payment rails, potentially reshaping how digital commerce operates in the years ahead.
