Bitwise to Shut Down Dogecoin ETF After Less Than a Year

Bitwise to Shut Down Dogecoin ETF After Less Than a Year

The asset manager plans to liquidate its NYSE Arca-listed BWOW fund in October, ending one of its Dogecoin investment products roughly 10 months after launch.

Bitwise is preparing to close its Dogecoin ETF, marking an early exit for a product that began trading less than a year ago.

The fund, known by the ticker BWOW, launched on November 26, 2025, giving investors exposure to Dogecoin without requiring them to purchase and custody DOGE themselves.

According to Bitwise’s September 10 filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, trading will end before the market opens on October 15, with the final regular trading session expected to take place on October 14.

Bitwise said the decision is part of an effort to streamline its investment-product lineup around changing investor demand. The company did not specifically attribute the closure to weak trading volume, assets under management or operating expenses.

BWOW Closure: What Investors Need to Know

EventExpected Date
Final day to trade BWOWOctober 14
Trading suspendedBefore market opens October 15
Dogecoin liquidationOctober 14
Final NAV calculationOctober 21
Cash distributionOctober 22

Investors who sell their BWOW shares before the final trading session will receive the prevailing market price when their orders are executed.

Those who continue holding shares through the liquidation process will not have to submit a separate redemption request.

Bitwise plans to calculate the fund’s final net asset value on October 21 and distribute the resulting cash to remaining shareholders on October 22.

The company expects the fund’s assets to be fully converted into cash by October 22 or shortly afterward.

Dogecoin Position Will Be Converted Into Cash

During the liquidation period, BWOW will no longer operate according to its original investment objective because its Dogecoin holdings will be sold.

The resulting cash will automatically be transferred to shareholders’ brokerage accounts.

Investors should also consider the potential tax consequences.

For shareholders holding BWOW in taxable accounts, the liquidation can create a taxable event. The amount of any resulting gain or loss can depend on factors such as the investor’s purchase price, holding period and account structure.

Bitwise recommends that investors consult their own tax advisers regarding their individual circumstances.

The fund’s registration is expected to be withdrawn after the liquidation and delisting process is completed.

Why Is Bitwise Closing BWOW?

Bitwise has described the move as an effort to optimize its product range and respond to evolving investor requirements.

The company has not stated that a particular factor, such as insufficient assets or trading activity, was responsible for the closure.

However, available market data shows that Dogecoin exchange-traded products have attracted relatively modest flows compared with larger cryptocurrency investment products.

BWOW reportedly generated nearly $3 million in trading volume during its launch week, but daily activity subsequently remained well below that initial level.

US Dogecoin exchange-traded products collectively recorded approximately $318,000 in net inflows during August, reversing relatively small outflows recorded in July.

That figure remains modest compared with the scale of activity seen in established Bitcoin and Ether investment products.

Dogecoin Products Have Seen Limited Capital Inflows

Dogecoin ETFs and related exchange-traded products generated approximately $300 million in cumulative trading volume following their launches, according to the figures provided.

For comparison, products connected to Hyperliquid recorded approximately $2.1 billion in volume, while Zcash and Chainlink products generated around $1.5 billion and $680 million, respectively.

It is important to distinguish trading volume from fund inflows.

Trading volume represents the value of shares changing hands during a period. Net flows measure the amount of capital entering or leaving a fund after accounting for redemptions.

Therefore, high trading volume does not automatically mean that an ETF has attracted a large amount of new investor capital.

DOGE Faces a Difficult Market Environment

BWOW provides exposure to a single cryptocurrency, making it a nondiversified investment product.

That structure means a major move in Dogecoin can have a direct and significant effect on the fund’s value.

Bitwise’s disclosures characterize DOGE as a memecoin and highlight several risks associated with the asset, including its reliance on speculative demand and its unlimited issuance structure.

The fund’s prospectus also identifies liquidity, custody, theft, blockchain-related failures and regulatory developments as potential risks.

Limited market liquidity can create additional difficulties because investors may not always be able to buy or sell ETF shares at their preferred price.

DOGE Falls as BWOW Closure Is Announced

Dogecoin traded near $0.084 on September 11, following a decline of approximately 2.6% from the previous session.

The decline occurred around the time Bitwise announced the ETF liquidation.

However, the available information does not establish that BWOW’s closure caused the move in DOGE’s market price.

Dogecoin trades across a much broader global market than a single ETF, meaning multiple factors can influence its price at any given time.

Bitwise Is Not Leaving Crypto ETFs

The closure of BWOW does not represent Bitwise’s withdrawal from cryptocurrency investment products.

The asset manager reports approximately $9 billion in client assets across more than 70 products, including ETFs, private funds, separately managed accounts, hedge fund strategies and staking products.

Its broader cryptocurrency lineup includes exposure to assets such as:

  • Bitcoin
  • Ether
  • Solana
  • XRP
  • Chainlink
  • Avalanche
  • Hyperliquid

Bitwise also says it serves more than 5,500 private wealth teams, registered investment advisers, family offices and institutional investors.

The company therefore appears to be consolidating its product lineup rather than abandoning crypto-based investment vehicles.

BWOW Investors Face a Fixed Exit Timeline

When BWOW launched, its management fee was 0.34%, with Bitwise initially offering a limited fee waiver subject to the conditions outlined in the fund’s launch materials.

Now, investors face a defined liquidation schedule.

Those who exit before October 14 will receive the market price available when their trades are executed. Investors who retain their shares through the liquidation will instead receive cash based on the fund’s October 21 NAV.

That final value could differ from the price at which BWOW previously traded.

What the Closure Says About Crypto ETFs

The BWOW liquidation highlights an important reality of the expanding cryptocurrency ETF market.

Regulatory access can make it easier for investors to obtain exposure to digital assets through conventional brokerage accounts, but launching an ETF does not guarantee long-term demand.

Fund sponsors still have to balance operating costs, investor interest, liquidity, trading activity and the strategic value of maintaining individual products.

For Bitwise, the decision to close BWOW comes as the company continues to operate a much larger crypto investment platform.

For Dogecoin investors, meanwhile, the development provides another reminder that exchange-traded exposure to a cryptocurrency can evolve independently from the underlying asset itself.

BWOW’s final trading session is expected on October 14, with remaining shareholders scheduled to receive liquidation proceeds after the October 21 NAV calculation.
