Binance uses monthly ethical hacking drills to strengthen employee cybersecurity

Binance uses monthly ethical hacking drills to strengthen employee cybersecurity

Binance is intensifying its internal cybersecurity efforts by conducting monthly simulated phishing attacks against its own employees, using ethical hackers to identify weaknesses before real attackers can exploit them.

According to Binance Chief Security Officer Jimmy Su, employees who repeatedly fail the company’s security tests undergo mandatory training, while persistent failures can negatively affect performance reviews and, in severe cases, even result in dismissal.

The initiative reflects the growing importance of defending against social engineering attacks, which have become one of the biggest cybersecurity threats facing the cryptocurrency industry.

Monthly Phishing Simulations Test Employee Vigilance

Binance’s internal red team a group of ethical hackers responsible for testing the company’s security—regularly launches realistic phishing campaigns targeting employees.

These exercises are designed to evaluate how staff respond to suspicious emails, fake job offers, fraudulent conference invitations and other common attack methods used by cybercriminals.

Employees who fall victim to the simulations receive additional cybersecurity training to improve their awareness and reduce future risks.

According to Su, Binance has been running these internal exercises for the past three to four years, leading to a significant improvement in the company’s overall security culture.

Social Engineering Has Become Crypto’s Biggest Threat

While blockchain networks themselves remain highly secure, attackers are increasingly targeting people rather than technology.

Social engineering attacks manipulate employees into revealing sensitive information, downloading malicious software or granting unauthorized access to company systems.

Industry data suggests these tactics are becoming increasingly common.

Research from AMLBot estimated that 65% of cryptocurrency security incidents in 2025 involved some form of social engineering rather than direct technical exploitation.

As a result, many security experts now consider employee awareness one of the most important defences against cybercrime.

Fake Recruiters and Conference Invitations Mimic Real Attacks

One of Binance’s most common simulation scenarios involves pretending to be recruiters offering attractive job opportunities.

Employees may receive convincing interview invitations or recruitment messages designed to test whether they follow proper security procedures before opening links or downloading files.

The company also conducts simulations using fake conference invitations, partnership proposals and promotional offers to evaluate how staff handle requests for personal or corporate information.

These scenarios closely resemble real-world tactics increasingly used by sophisticated cybercriminals targeting cryptocurrency companies.

Zoom Scams Highlight Growing Cyber Risks

Su noted that one particularly dangerous technique involves fake Zoom meeting invitations.

In these attacks, victims are encouraged to install what appears to be a legitimate software update but is actually malware capable of compromising their computers.

Many high-profile attacks begin with what appears to be a genuine business conversation, job interview or investment opportunity before gradually convincing victims to install malicious software.

The growing sophistication of these campaigns has made employee education an essential component of cybersecurity.

Previous Attacks Demonstrate the Risks

The dangers of social engineering have already resulted in major losses across the crypto industry.

In 2025, a large Venus Protocol user reportedly lost approximately $13 million after installing a malicious Zoom application that enabled attackers to gain control of the victim’s account.

Following emergency governance action, the protocol successfully recovered and returned assets worth approximately $11.4 million.

The incident demonstrated how even experienced cryptocurrency users can become victims of carefully planned social engineering operations.

Security Performance Affects Employee Evaluations

Binance has integrated cybersecurity awareness directly into employee performance assessments.

According to Su, repeated failures during phishing simulations reduce an employee’s performance rating, providing a strong incentive for staff to remain vigilant when handling suspicious communications.

Employees who consistently perform poorly despite additional training may face more serious consequences, including disciplinary action or termination.

The policy reflects Binance’s view that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility across the entire organisation rather than solely the responsibility of dedicated security teams.

Building a Stronger Security Culture

As the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by registered users and one of the industry’s biggest custodians of digital assets, Binance faces constant cybersecurity threats from increasingly sophisticated attackers.

Rather than relying exclusively on technical defences such as firewalls and encryption, the company is investing heavily in human security awareness by continuously training employees to recognise evolving attack techniques.

By combining ethical hacking, realistic phishing simulations and ongoing employee education, Binance aims to reduce one of the industry’s biggest sources of cyber risk—human error.

As social engineering continues to account for a growing share of cryptocurrency breaches, proactive security programmes like these are becoming an increasingly important part of protecting digital asset platforms and their users.
