ATOMS Raises $1.7 Billion From a16z to Build the Infrastructure for the “Age of Atoms”

ATOMS has announced a massive $1.7 billion equity investment led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), bringing together its various businesses under a single ATOMS equity structure and positioning the company for an ambitious push into industrial AI and the digitization of the physical economy.

As part of the investment, a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz will join the ATOMS board, deepening a relationship that ATOMS’ founder says stretches back to his Uber days.

The funding represents more than a major capital raise. ATOMS is positioning itself around a much larger thesis: after software transformed information, communication and commerce, artificial intelligence and automation are beginning to transform industries built around physical assets.

The company calls this emerging era the “Age of Atoms.”

From Uber and CloudKitchens to ATOMS

The vision behind ATOMS builds on a long-running effort to apply software to the physical world.

Uber digitized transportation by creating a software-powered network connecting vehicles, drivers and passengers.

CloudKitchens extended that philosophy into food production and real estate, using technology and infrastructure to rethink how physical food businesses operate.

ATOMS takes the concept significantly further.

The company wants to build what it describes as “atoms-based computers”, treating physical industrial infrastructure almost like computing architecture.

In this framework, manufacturing functions like computing power, real estate resembles storage, and transportation operates as the network connecting the system.

ATOMS ultimately wants to apply this model across major physical industries.

Industrial AI Targets Trillion-Dollar Physical Industries

While much of the current AI boom has focused on software, coding, search and digital knowledge work, ATOMS is betting that one of AI’s largest opportunities will emerge in the physical economy.

Industries such as manufacturing, mining, construction, heavy transportation and food production collectively represent trillions of dollars in global economic activity.

Yet many remain significantly less digitized than consumer technology or financial services.

ATOMS sees Industrial AI as the technology layer capable of changing that.

Industrial AI combines artificial intelligence, software, sensors, robotics, automation and physical infrastructure to understand and increasingly automate complex real-world operations.

Rather than using AI only to assist individual workers, the larger opportunity is to create integrated systems capable of optimizing entire industrial workflows.

That could include everything from predicting equipment failures and coordinating logistics to automating production facilities and managing physical infrastructure in real time.

ATOMS Wants to Build Computers for the Physical Economy

The company’s ambition is not simply to develop another industrial software platform.

ATOMS describes itself as potentially becoming an OEM for atoms-based computers, building integrated systems that combine physical infrastructure with software and intelligence.

The analogy reflects a broader shift occurring across technology.

Traditional computing transformed information into programmable bits. The emerging generation of robotics and physical AI aims to make increasingly complex parts of the physical world programmable as well.

Factories, warehouses, vehicles, construction sites and other industrial systems could increasingly operate as connected networks where AI continuously analyzes data, coordinates machines and optimizes operations.

ATOMS is betting that this transformation will define the next major industrial technology cycle.

The $1.7 Billion Investment Brings Major Capital Partners Together

The scale of the financing reflects the capital-intensive nature of that ambition.

Andreessen Horowitz leads the equity investment, alongside a group of investors including Bain Capital, Uber, Fifth Wall, Chemistry, A, K5 Global, Abstract, SV Angel and Alpha Square Group*.

ATOMS also lists major financial institutions including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan and Barclays among its debt partners.

The company has also consolidated its various businesses into a unified ATOMS equity structure as part of the transaction.

That combination of substantial equity and debt relationships could prove important because transforming physical industries requires considerably more capital than building conventional software.

Industrial technology often involves real estate, machinery, robotics, logistics networks and other expensive physical infrastructure alongside software development.

a16z Partnership Closes an Earlier Chapter

The investment also carries personal significance for ATOMS’ founder.

He described the partnership with Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz as “unfinished business,” referring to discussions about potentially working together around Uber as far back as 2011.

More than a decade later, that relationship has now materialized through one of ATOMS’ most important financing rounds, with Horowitz taking a direct governance role on the board.

The partnership also reflects how venture capital interest is expanding beyond purely digital AI applications toward companies attempting to combine AI with real-world infrastructure.

Physical AI Could Define AI’s Next Expansion

Generative AI has demonstrated how quickly artificial intelligence can transform digital workflows.

Physical AI presents a much harder challenge.

Real-world systems must deal with unpredictable environments, safety requirements, regulation, hardware constraints, logistics and enormous capital requirements.

A software error can often be corrected with an update. An error involving factories, vehicles, construction equipment or industrial machinery can have much larger consequences.

That complexity creates a substantial barrier to entry, but also potentially enormous economic value for companies capable of solving it.

ATOMS believes the next industrial revolution will emerge from combining AI intelligence with physical infrastructure at massive scale.

With $1.7 billion in new equity investment and a16z backing the strategy, the company now has substantial capital behind that thesis.

The broader bet is that AI’s next frontier will not exist only inside data centers and software interfaces.

It will increasingly move into the factories, transportation networks, mines, construction systems and physical infrastructure that power the global economy, turning the “bits revolution” into an “atoms revolution.”
