AI is making crypto security audits obsolete faster than ever: Experts warn

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the cybersecurity landscape—and the crypto industry is feeling the impact. Security researchers are warning that traditional one-time smart contract audits are no longer enough, as AI-powered tools enable hackers to discover vulnerabilities faster, more efficiently, and at unprecedented scale.

According to blockchain security firms, the lifespan of a security audit is shrinking as attackers increasingly rely on advanced AI models to scan thousands of lines of smart contract code, uncover hidden weaknesses, and exploit outdated decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.

The growing sophistication of AI-assisted cyberattacks is prompting experts to call for continuous security auditing rather than relying solely on pre-launch code reviews.

AI is accelerating Smart Contract Exploitation

For years, blockchain projects have depended on third-party security audits before launching their smart contracts. While these audits remain essential, experts say they are becoming less effective as AI dramatically reduces the time required to identify exploitable flaws.

According to TRM Labs, attack methods are evolving much faster than traditional audit cycles.

Instead of treating security reviews as a one-time milestone before deployment, protocols should regularly reassess their code as new attack techniques emerge.

In today’s threat environment, a smart contract considered secure a year ago may already contain vulnerabilities that modern AI tools can uncover within minutes.

Hackers are revisiting old DeFi protocols

Security researchers have also observed a growing trend of attackers targeting abandoned or inactive DeFi projects.

Many decentralized applications that are no longer actively maintained still contain millions of dollars in locked assets.

Using AI-assisted vulnerability scanning, attackers are increasingly reviewing these legacy codebases in search of overlooked security flaws that remained undiscovered during the original audits.

Because many of these protocols no longer receive updates or maintenance, they often present attractive targets for sophisticated hackers.

Crypto losses continue to mount

The warning comes as blockchain security firm CertiK reported that hackers stole approximately $1.32 billion from the crypto ecosystem during the first half of 2026.

According to the firm, attackers are adapting rapidly to stronger blockchain security by employing increasingly advanced techniques, including AI-assisted vulnerability discovery and automated exploit generation.

Rather than attacking newly launched protocols alone, cybercriminals are expanding their focus toward older smart contracts that have received little or no security review in recent years.

AI helps find critical vulnerabilities

Artificial intelligence is proving to be a powerful tool not only for attackers but also for security researchers.

A recent example involved the privacy-focused blockchain Zcash, where engineers discovered a serious vulnerability using a custom AI-powered auditing system built on Anthropic’s Claude Opus model.

The vulnerability had remained hidden for approximately four years and could have enabled undetectable counterfeiting within one of Zcash’s privacy pools.

Fortunately, the flaw was identified and patched before it could be exploited.

The incident demonstrates both the risks and benefits of AI, showing how advanced models can uncover security issues that traditional auditing methods may overlook.

AI is already finding millions in vulnerabilities

Research published by Anthropic further highlights AI’s growing capabilities in blockchain security.

In one study, AI agents successfully identified approximately $4.6 million worth of exploitable smart contract vulnerabilities, illustrating how rapidly automated security analysis is improving.

As these tools become more accessible, both defenders and attackers gain increasingly powerful capabilities.

Dormant protocols are becoming easy targets

Several recent attacks illustrate the dangers facing inactive blockchain projects.

Hackers exploited vulnerabilities in dormant DeFi protocols that had effectively ceased operations months—or even years—earlier.

In one case, attackers stole millions from Aztec Connect, despite the protocol having shut down in 2023.

Another exploit targeted mySwap, where smart contract vulnerabilities remained accessible long after the platform had stopped accepting new liquidity.

These incidents demonstrate that shutting down a user interface does not eliminate risks if vulnerable smart contracts remain deployed on-chain.

Continuous auditing is becoming essential

Security experts increasingly believe that blockchain projects should adopt continuous security monitoring rather than periodic reviews.

Modern security programs may soon include:

  • Regular smart contract reaudits
  • Continuous AI-powered vulnerability scanning
  • Automated code verification
  • Ongoing penetration testing
  • Real-time threat monitoring

This shift reflects a broader reality that blockchain security is becoming an ongoing operational process instead of a one-time development milestone.

Security requires more than better code

Experts also emphasize that stronger smart contracts alone cannot eliminate cybercrime.

According to TRM Labs, reducing crypto theft will also require coordinated efforts to disrupt criminal organizations, track illicit financial flows, strengthen regulatory cooperation, and combat state-sponsored hacking groups.

Improving code security reduces vulnerabilities, but broader ecosystem collaboration remains essential to preventing large-scale attacks.

Why it matters

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing the economics of blockchain security. By dramatically accelerating vulnerability discovery, AI is shortening the effective lifespan of traditional smart contract audits and forcing protocols to rethink how they manage cybersecurity.

As more than $72 billion remains locked across DeFi applications, attackers have enormous financial incentives to exploit outdated infrastructure. The industry’s future security will increasingly depend on continuous auditing, AI-assisted defense systems, and proactive monitoring rather than relying on audits conducted only before launch.

This shift reflects a broader reality that blockchain security is becoming an ongoing operational process instead of a one-time development milestone.
